An excellent book by a wonderful science writer, subtitled "The Battle for America's Beaches." Based on what is only fairly recent research on the science of shoreline erosion, Against the Tide explains the relationship between ocean and land at the place where they meet -- the beach. Ever heard of a littoral cell? It's a collection of water forces and factors that act in concert upon a stretch of shore. Oceanfront communities and city councils who try to buttress the land against the effects of wind and waves and fail to consider the mechanics of the coastline invariably create more sand loss, as evidenced by shrinking beaches on all of America's shores. A book that takes an eye-opening look at the result of "paving paradise," as Joni Mitchell once sang -- excellent writing, packed with history and the staggering attempts of developers to harness the sea. Five stars.
Please note: Paperback edition $25; hardcover $45 (list price is $83!)
