A clever black comedy about a charismatic tobacco lobbyist (Aaron Eckhart), revealing a good bit of the underlayment and intentions of the industry. Cigarettes effectively take out (kill) two jumbo-jets worth of people a day ... How did they become so effective? Thanks in part to Hollywood -- "talking pictures" left actors with not much to do but light up as they talked (picture Bogart, Bacall, and many more), setting a copycat example for millions. In this film, Nick Naylor battles the vehement smoking critic Senator Finisterre (William H. Macy) in the effort to debunk the link between cigarettes and lung cancer. The true star of the story is Nick's precocious son Joey, whose sage observations of his Merchant-of-Death dad are what keep Nick human. Very funny, putting the "choice" and "liberty" factor right back into the consumer's lap, but skating completely past the reality that nicotine is rapaciously addictive.
